My Affair with Suntory Yamazaki 18 yo

After the recent affair with the Suntory Yamazaki 12 yo, (no, I'm not a paedophile) I told myself that I must look out for the Yamazaki 18 yo after reading a rave of reviews about it. Yamazaki 18yo is the multi award winning whisky. It is proudly awarded SWSC Double Gold Medal in 2005, IWSC Trophy in 2006 and ISC Gold in 2007 and recently a Silver Medal Winner in the Malt Maniacs Award 2009.

I mentioned that this 18yo has to be in my Dream Drink List and now it has come true!

Unlike the medium-bodied Yamazaki 12yo, this 18yo is a full-bodied whisky with spicy cherry-like tones because it is matured in sherry casks. The nose is outstanding! It has a bouquet of toffee aromatics and some woody notes. This buttery copper-gold colored whisky offer a pleasant, long, dry finish with hints of orange peel and an oaky taste. It's amazingly complex and deep.

For some time it was believed by many that whisky made in Japan could not possibly measure up to the standards of the traditional Scotch distilleries. For a long time, the market for Japanese whiskies was almost entirely domestic. However, in recent years, a number of blind tastings have been organized by Whisky Magazine, which have included Japanese single malts in the lineup, along with malts from distilleries considered to be among the best in Scotland. I personally don't deny that.

During the dinner, I had 3 glasses of different whisky. The first one being the Yamazaki 18yo, second one a glass of Old Pulteney 17 yo and the Old Malt Cask Bunnahabhain 30yo. I must say that as much as I prefer older whiskies, the Yamazaki 18yo is quite outstanding. Perhaps it was the spiciness that overshadowed the mellow Old Pulteney.

I don't know, but on the palate, that day, that very night, I liked how the Yamazaki lingers in my tastebuds and the outer corner of my lips.

Market Price : RM550-580
