When you've gone sick of Chinese cuisine and got nowhere to eat, I suggest, to give Taiwanese cuisine a go. Not many places serve good Taiwanese cuisine and it's often a rare find in KL. I first got to know about Fong Lye when they open an outlet at The Gardens. If I'm not wrong, besides the outlet in Jalan Imbi, they have one at Desa Sri Hartamas as well. The ones at Imbi & Desa Sri Hartamas serves dishes with rice or porridge but the oulet at The Gardens only do set meals and accepts cash only (which is a very important note to remember).
A meal at Fong Lye has to be pre-planned and a reservation prior to dinner is highly recommended as this restaurant is always full. During one night, I can see each table having at least a third time turnover. Yes, it was that good! It's small, and not much room for you to move about but that is not stopping anyone from returning.
It must be my fourth or fifth time to this restaurant but I sadly I don't know where I have kept the previous pictures and all I have was these pictures from my last visit there 2 months ago. Gosh, there were too many restaurants to go and I have no chance to make a return visit. Oh well, lets talk about their dishes. On appetisers, we had a plate of fried shrimps to snack on while waiting. Their tofu cubes is also another must try.
Probably their most famous dish here is the "3 cup chicken" or "3 bei chi" (in mandarin) which is chicken cooked with black soya sauce, chilli and basil leaves. It's a little on the sweet side. Apparently, it's on the top-must-order-list. Then, there's also the stewed radish beef that I really like! The beef here is tender and very well marinated.
Besides that, to satisfy the pork cravings, there's this fried pork ribs that is crispy on the outside, goes very well on its own. You can also order their pig intestines or stomachs which comes in different styles of cooking. Even the steamed chicken which might looked simple, is tasty too.
Then, came this gigantic pot of fried fish served with soup. In the pot, there were lots of "goodies" such as meatballs, crabsticks, cabbages, yam and cute lil fish cakes!
Overall, it was an enjoyable meal although the space might be a little tight and the seats are all with low backing. This outlet at Jalan Imbi is still my favourite Fong Lye outlet.
After the meal, there is a complimentary glass of citrus drink which I think should be served at the beginning to improve our appetite. I like the array of colours of the fruit platter!
