The Social @ Changkat Bukit Bintang

The Social @ Changkat Bukit Bintang

I must have been one of the last person to have eaten at Social. My challenge is to dine at every outlet on Changkat Bukit Bintang. Probably I'll start with one outlet a month... Hmm... let me count... I think I have dined at El Cerdo, El Cerdito, Werners, LaVaca, Pinchos, Daikanyama, Twenty. One, Bermuda+Onion and a Chinese Restaurant (the name was forgotten, anyone please?) Ming Jia Shan (not nice in my own view) and now The Social. The next ones which I target to try are Magnificent Fish & Chips, Little Havana, Le Bouchon and Frangipani. There are all together 24 restaurants on Changkat BB I think. It'll take me at least a year to do so!

The Social is run by Ekachai Urairat, who was born in Thailand and studied catering in Britain, with the help of his wife and mother-in-law, who are all unmistakably good cooks. The Social was started in Bangsar (at Jalan Telawi Tiga, same row as Chawan opposite of Bangsar Village) and has been around for the past eight years. I have been to the Bangsar outlet but that was years ago.

So this is what I did yesterday on a public holiday (Sultan Selangor's Birthday). I was teasing my KL friends and make sure that they get a good rub of salt on their wounds telling them how I enjoyed my day off dining and drinking. Then one of them asked me, "do you know your sultan's name?" Err... nope (this goes to see how patriotic I am towards our ruler) Just enjoy the holiday la... Actually I kinda know his name now - Sultan Salahuddin Abdul Aziz! Well, happy birthday to you!

Cheers!

A kir royale is a popular French Cocktail made with a measure of creme de casis (blackcurrant liquor) and topped up with white wine. But nowadays, sparkling wine or Champagne is used to make a good glass of kir royale due to the attractive bubblies...

The one I had from Social was made with Prosecco (Italian sparkling wine) which costs RM30+ a glass compared to RM55 if you prefer Champagne (French). I asked for a new glass of kir royale after realising that the first glass they served have no sight of bubblies. They were nice enough to take it back and pop open a new bottle of prosecco for me but it wasn't good enough because the bottle was not chilled properly.

Aromatic Crispy Duck (RM32)

This is their signature dish. Not many places serve this aromatic crispy duck and they did a pretty good job with this one. Another place to get equally good aromatic crispy duck is at my favourite chinese restaurant at Cubes in Jaya 1. (Read my sis's, KY's and Cumi & Ciki's reviews) We were so lazy, we asked the kitchen to wrap it for us and we just pop the whole roll into our mouths! heheh

Otak-Otak (RM15)

I am not an otak-otak person and probably that explain why I wasn't smart enough. My friends said Thank God or else I'll be smarter than them. Well, this Muar otak-otak managed to convince me to have a second helping. I liked the way it was done because the outer layer were grilled to a crispy finish while preserving the juiciness of the otak-otak inside.

Nyonya Yam Cake (RM14)

I like yam cakes. But the traditional steamed ones. These are fried and I find them rather tough and dry. It wasn't done nicely yesterday because according to my friend whom is a regular, he said that the yam cake here is usually good.

The sheer pleasure of having a bubbly with oriental cuisine. Truly satisfying.

They have a vast menu of food from oriental, local favourites to western food like spaghetti. Prices are a lil steep compared to your usual food joints like maybe Madam Kwan but it's a nice place to hang out as they have a bar and pool table. So, come and eat, drink and play pool.
