Petite Millie @ 1Utama, PJ

If you wanted something in between of a normal cafe/bistro and fine food, this might be the place that fits right in between. Petite Millie is the latest spin off from Millesime which is famed for its fine French Gourmet food with a 'Private Kitchen Concept' located at Kencana Petroleum in Solaris Dutamas. From the latest news I received, this outlet is in NO association with Chef Max Chin who runs Millesime. Chef Max is now in Thailand, setting up some F&B projects and will be away for a few months while his capable staff is now running Millesime while he's away.

I've recently received my bonus and decide to buy my family a dinner here. It's a place where I won't be getting a minor heart attack when I peered into the bill. And what's a better place than having it at a shopping mall? Unlike Millesime, their wine list here is limited to a few choices. I guess this is really not a place to drink the fine wines. They serve wine by the glasses and if you want a full bottle, prices start from RM76 to RM142.

Haloumi Beetroot Tart (RM18.50)

Under salads and comestibles, the Haloumi Beetroot Tart caught my attention. Besides the pan fried Haloumi cheese, it has pine nuts, champagne vinegar mimosa tossed with fresh Mizuna Leaves. I really love the Haloumi cheese but this one here was a little disappointing. The cheese was too thick and when it arrived, the cheese has gone a little oily and less pleasant. The rest was fine and it's the cheese that let down the dish.

Field Mushroom Potpourri (RM18)

They do serve a number of unique tarte flambee here. And it's a must try. Tarte flambee is to northern Alsace what pizza is to southern Italy. This is an Alsatian classic. In the dialect spoken in Alsace, flammekueche means ''cooked in the flames'' and the French flambee has a similar meaning. Unlike Pizza, this dough, thin as a crepe is spread with creme fraiche, a thick soured cream mixed with a delicate fresh white cheese called fromage blanc. Mine has got a generous portion of shimeji mushrooms and button mushrooms seared with pistou and served piping hot!

Luv a Duck (RM23.50)

As this is really an easy going dining place, they do serve a variety of interesting "Tartine" Sandwiches. My sister ordered a Luv a Duck, which consists of slices of buttered country bread, rocket leaves with Orange - Dill Aioli topped with slices of peppered duck breast. I liked the sandwich very much because the duck breast is robust and flavourful when paired with the rocket leaves. The serving comes with thick cut fries. Perfect for a short lunch!

Poutine Cheek RM26

Under the Poutine menu, there's 6 different types to choose from. Poutine is a French-Canadian concoction comprised of french fries, gravy, and cheese curds. It's an idea from the Quebec connection. While it's a favourite dish of the Canadians, I don't see why anyone here doesn't like this? The thick cut fries and the 6 hours braised beef cheek with pepper and truffle oil sounds sinful enough to have me running another 5km to burn off the fats from this dish.

Basil Oil tossed Spaghettini Pasta (RM28)

In the mains section, there's a variety of dishes from pasta to lamb loin if it tickles your fancy. I ordered a basil oil tossed spaghettini pasta with seared rare tuna loin a la Plancha (grilled on a metal plate) and tomato Beurre Blanc and zucchini. It's a classic white sauce made with white wine and is enhanced with tomatoes, basil, and chives. While the tuna loin is well presented, the spaghettini however was a little let down. It wasn't al dente as I have expected it to be.

Bourgoignonne style Beef Bavette (RM40.50)

Bavette is the beef steak cut from the abdominal muscles of the cow. It's not often that we come across these words that are used in the menu. However, after the dinner, I learnt something. This is a the most underrated cut of beef. This Angus flank is full of flavour with the added bonus of being inexpensive. Well marbled with fat, braised with shallot, mushroom and demi glazed, it's sweet and tastes like a caramelized beef. Since I don't really have a palate for sweet stuff, thus I don't really fancy this. You can give me a grilled beef anytime but I'm no fan of a braised beef.

While prices here aren't as affordable but if you are not ready to splurge on fine dining, you can always start from here. Have a go at some of the special dishes although it's not going to be everyone's favourite, I'm sure Petite Millie would have created a niche for itself.
