Breakfast at Tuttons @ Covent Garden

Frankly speaking, never wake up too early in London or else you find that there's a lack of places to eat. Probably it was a weekend, and I still can't get used to the time or I just didn't know my way around. After 3 visits, there are still many places that I have yet to explore. Waking up at 7am, I wanted to take a train to Picardilly Circus but the station was closed so I had no choice to alight at Leicester Square. I walked around to look for a hearty breakfast but didn't manage to make my mind as the street is filled with pubs. I could have done my research earlier on breakfast places in London! Hmmph..

Anyways, so I walked and walked and finally I arrive at Covent Garden. This place brought back memories of the day I first stepped foot in London. It was at least 5 years ago and I visited Covent Garden due to their famous tourist attractions - live talent performance, cafes and the Apple Market arts and crafts.

I remembered that it used to be livelier and more varieties at the marketplace but now I see that this place is quite quiet and there were less stalls. Everything is really expensive although some of the things here is quite unique and it makes a nice collectible. This includes art pieces, unique clocks and jeweleries.

I walked around and this place caught my attention. Mainly it was due to the prominent red awning, the red chairs, big windows and a nice building. Lucky enough it was opened for breakfast and I'm freezing cold. I need my breakfast and a cup of warm tea!!!

This is indeed a very cosy place. Service was good but I loved the setting more. However, I think all restaurants in London has very tight spaces. I know that they are trying to squeeze in more tables but sometimes I wished that there's more space for privacy.

I ordered the Traditional Breakfast Set (£9.95), which is the most attractive heading in the menu. Hehe.. It comes with 2 fried free range eggs, smoked streaky bacon, cumberland sausage, grilled tomato, Portobello mushroom served with baked beans and fried bread. I wished they gave me 2 Portobello Mushrooms instead of 2 eggs!! The set also comes with tea or coffee and in London, of course I asked for a pot of Earl Grey!

This is the first time I encountered the term "fried bread". In UK, it's part of the full traditional English breakfast and it may refer to as French toast. Well, there are a few versions of this fried bread - bread coated in a mixture of egg and milk and then fried, bread fried with bacon fat or bread fried with butter. I think mine is fried with butter but it's not oily at all. The bread is crispy and grainy which gave it an extra crunch.

However, I felt that a glass of freshly squeezed orange juice is lacking at the beginning of my breakfast and so I ordered a glass at £2.95. I think this is the most expensive glass orange juice I've ever drank!

They do serve lunch and dinner. It's a modern European cuisine restaurant and you can look up the menu at their website here. At least Tuttons saved my morning that very day.
