Honestly, there's so many Japanese restaurants mushrooming in the SS15 neighbourhood that I've lost count on the number of such establishments. It was out of the blue that we came to Yamada because we couldn't decide what to eat. It was dinnertime and we were looking for a place where we can bring our own bottles and Japanese cuisine is one of the choices since the food would go well with the 2 champagnes that we were bringing to the restaurant. Moreover, we were delighted when I called and make a reservation and was told that there will not be any corkage charge.
Spider maki (RM25)
This is always a must-order dish for me as I love a good soft shell crab roll. However, this one here has too little soft shell crab in them and the roll is too big.
Moriawase 5Hinmori (RM80)
This is the Chef's selection of 5 types of sashimi.
Overall, the selection is quite fresh but the mackerel is quite fishy.

To go with the sashimi, of course we had to pop a champagne. One thing about bringing your own bottles here - don't expect they have proper glasses. They didn't have the champagne flutes and we had to settle for the old school champagne glasses that you see at a wedding dinner champagne fountain. I think the next time around, I'll bring my own glasses.
We brought 2 bottles of champagne. One is the Lanson Brut 1996 which I bought from Langkawi at a duty free price. I saw it on the shelves and it's quite a good buy and since I've not tried this champagne house before, why not give it a go? This is one of Champagne's oldest houses and with such a price tag (under RM200), it's quite a steal. It has a strong golden hue with zesty aromas. I can taste some of the lemons and tangerine flavours but the finishing wasn't too well. I suspect that the bottle isn't kept properly at the retail outlet because the taste wasn't that graceful and elegant as described by the label.
Ah... nevermind as we still have the Tattinger to save the day. The Tattinger Prelude is produced exclusively from the Grand Crus vineyards in the Champagne region. This non-vintage blend comprises of 50/50 Pinot Noir and Chardonnay and making full use of the aged reserved components to build up its taste profile. Opposite of the Lanson, Tattinger has a pale yellow hue with creamy bubbles. It has fine texture, zesty lemons, roasted nuts and a complex taste. For a NV, this is really a good bottle! (Wine Advocate gives it a 90 points in 2009)

Cold Green Tea Buckwheat Noodles. Vivid dirty green colour and smooth & slippery texture. Quite refreshing.
This is a simple salmon & flying fish roll which I like it to go with the pickled pink ginger and shoyu.
Saba Shio Set (RM50)
Calvin had a dinner set that comes with the grilled Mackerel with salt, deep fried chicken and a choice of udon or soba noodles. The fish is well grillled and I love the slight salty taste.

Ziling had this dinner set that comes with sashimi served on rice and a choice of udon or soba. The rice is seasoned with japanese pink dry shrimps that is powdered. It's quite sweet. I felt that the rice is filling enough and with the noodles, you're full to the brim!

This is the skewer platter with 5 different types of meat (Grilled chicken with onions, chicken, scallop, gizzard and prawns)

Overall, this is a fairly good japanese restaurant if you're looking for an averagely priced japanese cuisine. The deco is simple and nothing too glamorous here so that you don't need to dress to the nines to dine here. Our bill came up to about RM380 for the 5 of us. The best thing is, I can BYO!
