Barracks Cafe @ Dempsey Hill Singapore

Dempsey Hill in Singapore is indeed quite a nice place to trawl for food, drinks or even a place to hang out on a lazy Sunday noon. While the times I've been here are always in the night, it's refreshing to come here at least once in daytime and see what this place has to offer. That includes spotting of beautiful automobiles where I can only dream to own.

The 35,000 sqf HOUSE, formerly an army barrack set on the Dempsey Hill now houses a beauty emporium, a BARRACKS cafe and a CAMP bar. We were at BARRACKS cafe for brunch on a Sunday noon. The concept is really simple - cosy dining with a fine dining touch. Although it doesn't involve dressing to the nines to this place, the food here does have a stringent quality standard and it's set against a quirky ambiance with mismatched tables and chairs. They looked to me like someone's unwanted furniture put together in one place.

I liked the menu. It looks like your daily newspaper. The food menu is simple - home touch of comfort food. They do serve a good variety of brunch bites and their specialty is in their eggs. Dishes range from SGD$ 12 to 36.

To start our Sunday brunch, what's better than a bottle of wine with a bunch of alcoholics. Actually we are not alcoholics, I'm just in the company of people in the wine & spirits industry and I supposed drinking in the early noon isn't too odd. Afterall, we all love our job! The Nicolas Potel Clos de la Roche Grand Cru 2004 is a Burgundy from Cotes-de-Nuits. It's indeed a very nice aromatic and perfumed wine. Perfect for a brunch where the wine opens up slowly in the glass as we drank and ate.

This is the Barracks Free Form Eggs ($21) where you get to choose how you want the 2 eggs to be done. Seen here is scrambled eggs served with 2 tiny-weeny Chipolata sausages with rose tomatoes and mushroom ragout. $21 is indeed a high price to pay for this dish. How much can those 2 eggs cost?!! Price aside, the breakfast dish was really good. The eggs were fluffy and flavourful.

Their specialty here is the Truffle Fries. Ahh... my two favourite food all combined in one! While many would claim that they do truffle this and truffle that, these truffle fries are really one of those rare occasion where I can smell them coming. The aroma of truffles is truly strong and when you bite into the thin cut fries, you can taste the truffle. A snack not to be missed when you're here!

Try asking for some Ketchup and it comes like this!

The other friends had a plate of the Old Fashion American Sliders ($23) which was recommended and it comprises of two small buns with beef patties and sweet potatoes and truffle fries. Friends commented that the burgers were good and so were the fries but thinks that the sweet potatoes should be replaced with some greens instead. There were too much carbo on the plate.

I had the Barracks Good ole Fish and Chips ($29). It's indeed every childhood's favourite and I can never get bored eating fish and chips especially this one here. It has a hot pocket of cod fish, the English pub style served with an ample serving of its signature truffle fries and malt vinegar and homemade tartar sauce. I love the fish as it is crispy on the outside and so juicy and tender in the inside. Look at the fish meat and you'll know it's a quality plate of fish and chips. Truly satisfying and I did lick the plate clean!

Overall, the experience has been good despite the hot and humid weather. It wasn't cooling inside as we were seated near the window where you can still feel the sunshine. The prices are a little of the higher end as you can expect of restaurants on Dempsey Hill but I must say that at least the quality of food and the ingredients used is satisfactory.

You want to dine here? Better make a reservation or else be disappointed.
