Bruno's Restaurant @ Jaya 33

* Due to some reasons, Bruno has already ceased its operations. This post is thus a remembrance.
Remember my super duper busy previous week? Not only it was super duper busy, but I happened to be enjoying lots of good food and alcohol too (which is definitely contributing to my expanding waistline and flabbiness). Not that I have to have a dose of alcohol every week but it just happened coincidentally that the word "alcohol" and the word "good food" couldn't be detached from me.

I joined my "wine kakiis" for a dinner last Friday at Bruno's restaurant at Jaya 33. Usually I'll be at Vintry's for wine with my friend Amy but this time I had the opportunity to taste Bruno's which is a too good offer to be turned down. As usual, a dinner with my "wine kakiis" will never be complete without good wines because they are all so proficient in wine appreciation which made me looked like a noob in the wine department sometimes. But I did learn how to pronounce the French wine names! Lol....

Bruno's was tucked at the left corner of Jaya 33 which is accessible from the main entrance near the jockey parking. It's a very classy restaurant with a cosy dimmed ambiance and a choice of alfresco dining or air-conditioned. The downside of the air-conditioned restaurant without private rooms is that we can't puff away. We ordered according to the waiter's recommendation as none of us had been here before.

We started with the appetizer which consists of a bread basket with balsamic vinegar (complimentary) and the Spanish Ham & Sausage Platter. The Spanish Ham & Sausage Platter is a must. It was good (a bit salty) and it goes very well with the bread and the salad. The highlight of the night would of course be the roasted suckling pig!

According to my friends, the suckling pig didn't turn out as good as El Cerdo's. I have not tried El Cerdo's suckling pig and thus not in a position to comment. However, I didn't really like the way it was served because I find the meat too be too thick. I like how it was done at Chinese restaurants where they serve the roasted skin first and then the meat to be used in the other dishes.

The next recommendation would be the Seafood Paella and the Shrimp Linguine. It was really good. The Paella (which is also Spanish Rice using the medium grained rice and cooked in tomato) is definitely a must order dish. When I was in Spain, I had Paella almost everymeal and it goes very well with Sangria. But when you have fine wines, of course you drink the good ones! Sorry no picture on that. The next dish we had was the Pork Ribs.

It was not too bad. I prefer this over the suckling pig but I find the dish rather dry. However, the small roasted potatoes and beans that goes with the dish was good. I like the slightly salted roasted mini potatoes....

No dinner with so much meat would be complete without the red wines. We had a few bottles that night from Italian affair of Pio Cesare Barolo 2004, Barbera 2006 to French Chateaus of Chasse Spleen Moulis 1998, Les Pagodes de Cos 1998 and Sarget de Gruaud Larose 2002. I find that I liked the Chateau Chasse Spleen Moulis en Medoc 1998 (bordeaux). It has a very appealing nose, with very little tannin. The next favourite was of course the Les Pagodes de Cos, the second wine of Chateau Cos d'Estournel was rather appealing too with a firm and dense palate but a little bit acidic. When the grapes at the vineyards were harvested, the best ones is used for the grand vin and the leftovers (second grade grapes) is used to bottle it into these second wines.

Overall, we enjoyed the night with interesting conversations and good wines. The seven of us had 6 bottles, which is a little bit under our normal consumption. Our usual consumption would be at least 750ml to a person! I liked Bruno's for its choice of food and ambiance. It's definitely not my last visit there!
