After a good run on Saturday, I had a hearty meal the next day. It was nothing less than a pure indulgence of good wines and good food. What a better way to celebrate my exhaustive run but to sip on some delicious champagne and have some REAL comfort food? Mutiara Palace was the venue.
Situated at the same building as Courts and beside McDonalds, Mutiara Palace is really easily accessible and parking is not too difficult too. This restaurant belongs to the same Palace Group of restaurants which include Imbi Palace & Grand Palace which I often visit.
While we were waiting for the others to turn up, we started with some bubblies and some appetisers. The bubbly that I suggested to first sip is my favourite bottle of Billecart Salmon Rose. It's one of the best tasting and reasonably priced rose out there. This is delicate and impeccably balanced bottling with a nice pale silver-pink hue. The other 2 champagnes that we are having are Dom Perignon 2002 & Louis Roederer NV (the brother of Cristal).
Following the footsteps of the movie pretty woman, a champagne goes with strawberries! And for that, we have a bouquet of strawberries beautifully laid on a huge bowl of ice shavings!! Honestly, I'm not a big fan of strawberries due to its slight sour notes but I realised that if you submerge the strawberries into the rose, it taste superbly sweet and juicy!
Mutiara Palace makes very nice BBQ pork. The "char siew" is absolutely delicious with the slight charred sides and sweetness. It's not too fatty but it remains tender and with the right amount of stickiness. The other must try is the roasted rolled chicken with stuffings. I like how the crispy skin of the chicken brings the robust flavours to the chicken meat and the stuffings.
After that, we had a platter of Geoduck slices, sashimi style on ice & a bowl of warm chicken soup. The soup is very thick and creamy, full of the goodness of chicken. You can also choose to eat the Geoduck slices by dipping it into the hot pot for a few seconds. Remember not to over cook it. I think the sashimi style of eating is very nice because you can really taste the seawater that reminded me of fresh oysters.
The main dish was of course the hot pot. I find it such a nice & comforting evening to be having hot pot with a group of friends. not only it's a healthy choice, it's fun to do some work while eating which includes dipping of the ingredients and ensuring the food don't over cook. The 2 reds that we were drinking that night is a bottle of Aromes de Pavie 2006 & the Pavillion Rouge 2000. The revisit of Pavie surprises me. It is a very wonderful red from Saint-Emilion.
Tadaaa.... these are our ingredients for the hot pot - mandatory fresh tiger prawns, lamb slices, beef slices, pork neck slices, squid balls, meat balls, fish slices, fried beancurd skin and vegetables. I must say that the quality of hot pot here is good as the soup is milky due to the hours involved in boiling the pork bones and the meat balls are all handmade. Ingredients are fresh and I'm very happy with the hot pot! I was also told that the hot pot is a very popular feature at the restaurant here.
Dinner ends no earlier than midnight because we were also watching the football match. It was really an enjoyable dinner and thank god I have my sister to drive me home.
Ok, let you ogle at the strawberries again!
