My Cookbook @ Sunway Giza

If you're looking for simple classic Malaysian dishes with refined touches and affordable prices, look no more as all can be found under My Cookbook. It's where your classic dishes gets a new makeover - looking more beautiful and tasting better! It's not just a visual tease, it appeases the tastebuds too.

This place has been opened for more than half a year and yes, I didn't have a go at it until recently.

The brain child of this place, John Teo is actually a good friend of mine who has a fine palate for good food and fine taste for deco. His family also runs the very successful New Convox & Jia which has firmly established a reputation in the industry known for its exceptional product quality on a wide selection of tableware, buffetware and furniture. I'm one of the customers and that's how I got to know the family.

Wine - own collection & not included in the menu!

I've always wanted to go and try his restaurant but I kept procrastinating until recently he called up and forced me to fix a date claiming that he had been inviting me for the past half a year but I was too busy being a jet-setter! That's sarcasm and because you're my friend, I forgive you with my kindness and generosity.

That night, what we're about to savour is all from his new menu. He believes that it's a chef's duty to constantly reinventing or to create new dishes to excite the customers' tastebuds and that's going keep them coming back.

We started off with a bowl of colourful Asam Prawn Salad (RM15.90) which had julienned cucumbers, succulent prawns, onions and some greens topped with a tangy & slightly spicy sauce with lots of peanut bits. I love the salad as it reminds me something like "acar" but with the addition of fresh prawns.

The other dish that I was told to try was a wonderful plate of Smoked Omega Eggs with egg roe and Shimeji mushroom (RM8.90) all served beautifully on a spoon and then onto a retangle white plate. I had the first spoon and indeed the egg melts smoothly into my palate and then we went a little crazy and began to pour a teaspoon of truffle oil (which he bought from HK) onto another half of the egg and the effect was magical. The truffle oil hits right into my palate and the egg tasted so differently after that - more fragrant & robust! Oh btw, the truffle oil is not available on the menu. You'll have to call John to spare some!

The other highlight of the new menu is this artery clogging, cholesterol charging, and mind boggling King Prawn with hor fun (flat rice noodle) that is soaked in crab roe with egg white gravy (RM29.90). This is the killer dish as it makes you lick the plate clean. You wouldn't want to waste any drop of this crab roe gravy I tell you!!! It's very different from some of the restaurants outside because they won't use crab roe as the gravy for this dish as it will be too expensive. Even John couldn't resist dining at his own outlet. While he was eating this, he was also busy savouring a plate of spaghetti which will be another new addition to the menu.

I know it's weird to find a Sting Ray with spicy Asam sauce (RM28.90) here where it's presented ala fine dining style. It's not only about the appearance of the dish but this sting ray here is pan fried (instead of grilled) and the spiciness of the asam sauce DOES NOT overpower the taste of the sting ray. This is a very important point as the ones we usually get from the hawker stalls have gravy and marinate that is too spicy and we won't be able to tell if the fish is fresh or otherwise.

Well, I wished I could eat more but seriously, I'm bloated after that few dishes. I'm more happy to have a glass of lemongrass tea and then leave but he insisted that I have to try this Lemongrass jello with fresh Fruits (RM9.90). After looking at the picture of the menu, I couldn't resist the beauty and decide to give myself a last stuffing before I go. It turns out to be one of the better desserts I ever had! It has a very refreshing taste of lemongrass, the jiggly jello paired with some tangy fruits like kiwi and strawberry. It should be an appetiser! I love it! What an excellent end to a meal.

I was also given a personal tour of the place. The ground floor is for casual dining, the 1st floor has two dining sections which can sit 8 & 10 people respectively with a different theme and the 2nd floor is the new addition to the restaurant. It's like a private bar of your own if you want to hold a party or an event here. I love the ice-like bar and nifty karaoke system that houses thousands of songs! This place can be booked for any event with just a minimum spending of RM1500 and the menu can be customised too.

Hmm... how about having my 30th birthday here?!! John frowned. "It'll be 3 years down the road - lah!" Ok... let's not dwell into my age here. Overall, it's indeed a place to be explored if you like what you're reading.
