The Best-est Egg Tarts!!!

I was in Ipoh for the weekend with chicas Hue Gee, Liwei and Yiling. Mom came along as she needed to run some errands back at our hometown. Speaking of which, I think it has been more than a year since I last returned to Ipoh - a quaint old town with good food and slow-paced life. However, on my recent trip back, Yiling and I can't help but notice that there were so many Reflexology centres that are mushrooming in this town.

We wondered why ah? Is that because the folks had to walk a lot that their feet hurt so often that they need to go for a reflexology treatment? Or are these shops simply a facade for other underground activities? I wonder why...

Ipoh Shreded Chicken Hor Fun

Anyways, I was happy that Jasmin (my dearest gf) was around and she was free to meet up with me. I'll save that food review at Citrus for another day. There are a few must-dos when I'm in Ipoh. The first being - breakfast at my favourite Ipoh Shreded Chicken Hor Fun at this stall in Lok Wee Kui coffeeshop located at the corner of Jalan Mustapha Al-Bakri which is just directly opposite Kamdar.

The 2nd one is buying egg tarts at the Weng Seng coffee shop which is located on the same row as Super Kinta on the Cockman Street. Don't ask me why is the street named such because I really have no idea. Maybe the people there were quite cocky during the old times. The egg tarts here is to die for!

The egg tarts are made with fresh eggs and fresh milk which explains why the egg custard in the middle is so smooth and milky. The flaky pastry is layered so finely that there is a whooping 48 layers in each tart. I bet many people didn't know that or even bothered to count. Unlike the famous egg tarts from Tong Kee in KL, I actually prefer this one as it has a very nice texture, fluffy pastry and it's not too sweet either.

The trick is to reheat the egg tarts in an oven or toaster for 5 minutes before serving. It tastes even better when the pastry and the egg custard filing is warm. It used to be much cheaper but the recent price has gone up to RM1.40 a piece.

I tried asking the owners if they are interested to open an outlet in KL but they are not. The recipe will only be kept within the family. Haha... no, I ain't going to marry into the family just for the recipe! Lol... Anyways, if you have a chance, do try the egg tarts and their egg swiss roll. It's simply heart melting.
