Guess where am I heading to? Bracing the heavy traffic on Orchard Rd on a weekday and walking up to somewhere that somehow looked familiar. Yeah, that's exactly where I am heading to! My heart raced as I was near Mandarin Orchard. I wanted to avoid the lunch crowd and my mission this time - Taste the Legend.
The legend has it that Mandarin Orchard serves the best Chicken Rice in Singapore, or probably the world since no other country has a cult following on chicken rice like what they have there. My last visit to the island and the famous Tian Tian Hainanese Chicken Rice tempted me to continue my quest for the ultimate Chicken Rice in the country!
This award-winning Mandarin chicken rice has been a mainstay in the Chatterbox menu since it first opened in 1st August 1971. It was surprisingly introduced by a German Executive Chef called Peter Gehrmann whom was inspired by the chicken rice served at a popular local Hainanese coffee shop and then it marked the first time a hawker fare being served in a hotel restaurant.
The menu carries a wide range of hawker fare from the award-winning chicken rice to char koay teow and bak kut teh. Haha, and best part was - prices range from S$21 to S$28!!! It's definitely "dee most expensive hawker fare you can get!" But that did not deter me to try their Mandarin Chicken Rice which was highly recommended in the menu.
The portion is actually very big. I must say that, it's a little too much for me. The chicken slices are very generous. There's actually two layers of chicken in that bowl and I was surprised too. The secret to eating it is to pour the sauces from the chicken dish into the bowl of rice. It enhances the flavour of the rice and dip the chicken into the ginger and chilli sauce.
As to what gives me the kick? I would think it's in the whole-grain Jasmine rice. It was so fragrant and every grain is in it's perfect shape. The homemade chilli sauce didn't disappoint either. The chicken was tender and the skin is not too fat which is great because I can gobble everything up.
My verdict of Mandarin Chicken Rice compared to Tian Tian Hainanese Chicken Rice - I'll go for the chicken at Tian Tian because it's really silky smooth like tofu and I'll go for the rice and sauces at Mandarin Chatterbox. If only I can have the best of both worlds. I wonder if Chatterbox would allow me to bring my own chicken?!!
It's S$25.00 vs S$2.80 chicken rice. Which will you choose?
Well, I would say that despite the pricey Mandarin Chicken Rice that can buy me almost 10 plates of Tian Tian, I would not write it off my to-eat-list. I think coming to Mandarin for its Chicken rice would be something like an annual pilgrimage. See you next year!
