A Bak Kut Teh business that has been thriving for the past 30 years old couldn't be wrong right? I happened to chance upon the Song Fa BKT outlet at New Bridge Rd one morning when I woke up and didn't know what to eat. This was in November when I was suddenly craving for bak kut teh in the republic. I heard that the BKT in Singapore has a different taste from the Klang BKT that we Malaysians are used to and so I googled "the best BKT in Singapore" and it brought me to this place.
It's very easy to locate this shop. It's a corner shop located along New Bridge Road where you can reach there easily by MRT and the station is Clarke Quay.
I've always think that chinese tea is a must when it comes to eating BKT. The hot chinese tea will balance the meaty taste and it cleanses the palate. And I liked Pu Er. It's even better if the Pu Er tea leaves has been aged. The cups are so small that I will need to drink from 3 cups to quench my thirst. Here, they have a few stoves with a kettle where you can refill the hot water yourself.
In any BKT, of course ordering the pork rib is a must! It doesn't come in a big claypot but the soup is refillable (rejoice!). There's lots of garlic and the soup is a clear soup with heavy pepper taste. I actually don't mind this peppery BKT for a change. I think both the herbal and peppery BKT does have its fans. For the very 1st time tasting the Singapore's BKT, I kind of like this taste as well. I find this soup less robust in taste which gives me room to eat more.
Since this is not a claypot style BKT, I can't order my pig stomach, intestine and all the other ingredients to be added into one pot. Here, you can order it separately. Sharing the same soup base as the pork rib, this pig stomach is very good as it goes very well with the peppery taste. Soup is refillable as well.
For the other side dishes, I ordered a Braised Chicken Feet ($3.50/5.50), Braised Pig Intestines ($6/8) and Salted Vegetables ($1.20/2.20/3.20). I love the chicken feet that comes with a generous serving of beancurd skin. The feet is very tender and it just slides easily from the bones. The braised intestines is good but I still prefer it to be served with the peppery soup. And the salted vegetables whets the appetite.
Overall, I did enjoy a good morning breakfast at Song Fa. And that morning, it happened to be drizzling and it makes it a perfect weather to indulge in BKT. After that, I've made a revisit and tried the other dishes too. Yummy!
